You just mentioned some of my favorite comedians. Also, Ernie Kovacs and Howdy Duty are obvious influence on Andy Kauffman. I love abstract comedy that goes against the norms of a basic punchline/joke. But, I still think that Andy was a person who was stuck in his own galaxy. And that what made him funny is the ironic imaginative characters. Yes, he is imitating a little kid, but comedy is based on child-like observations. I agree with most of your stuff, but I disagree with the political stuff.

I don't think he thought of himself as a comedian, but (Possibly) an entertainer.Sometimes I wondered if, at some point, We became the Entertainment and Andy the Audience; (Through the looking glass as it were) He morphed from simple things that all people have done at some point in their life,to more and more bizarre put-ons and characters, pushing the envelope to places No One Has Gone Before, and survived; Likely a Most Unique and Once-In-A-Lifetime Character.

ORIGINAL?? By mixing cultures into an 8 year old do you mean like Jackie Gleason or Jerry Lewis or perhaps Gracie Allen!?? Maybe you meant Joe E Brown or perhaps the racist based Minstrel Shows- yes each of these characters came first- It appears Kaufman fans like Obama fans refuse to see the truth. Beyond a TV show character Kaufman was the worst kind of entertainer- disrespectful of his audience. If he wouldn't have died you all would have found him as overbearing as we all did in the 80's.

He never claimed to be funny, he just wanted any reaction from people.

some say he couldn't hack it as a real comedian, maybe there's some truth to that
